Grain-Free Warnings
If you’re trying to put your pup solely on a grain-free diet, consult your veterinarian! The FDA is currently investigating how grain-free diets can interplay with genetics, and Deficient Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in your doggo [1]. DCM is caused by a taurine deficiency and or it’s a genetic predisposition. Sometimes, these two factors negatively coincide when your doggo is getting a grain-free meal.
You’re considering putting your dog on a grain-free diet because their health is your number 1 concern. Make sure it’s the right choice for you and your pooch.
Why Do Dogs Need Taurine?
Dogs typically get taurine from meat, eggs, and seafood. It isn’t found in essential vegetables, which provide different nutrients to you and your dog. While taurine seems like a no-brainer, grain-free diets are causing a deficit that could harm your furry-friend [2].
So, what does taurine actually do? It protects:
- their heart, brain, and body
- your pooch against obesity
- the liver against oxidation from free radicals
- dogs with diabetes
- their body’s immune response
- and promotes reproductive health
- doggos vision and their eyes, in general
If you need to put your dog grain-free, check the first ten ingredients. If you don’t see a specific meat product, such as kangaroo, chicken, or eggs, then look further. The first ingredients shouldn’t be pea protein, potato protein, soybean meal, etc.
Dogs need whole-food ingredients in their diet to thrive. Don’t let the grain-free hype take you from one food filler to the next [3].
